7 Things I Learned During My First Week of Intuitive Eating

You don't have to be perfect all the time is one of the 7 things I learned during my first week of intuitive eating

Intuitive eating has been gaining a lot of traction lately, and for good reason!

In a nutshell, it is an approach to eating that is based on listening to your body and honoring your hunger and fullness cues. I decided to give it a try for myself last week. Although intuitive eating is a relatively new concept to me, so far I am really enjoying it!

In this blog post, I will share with you seven things that I have learned during my first week of intuitive eating.

If you are considering giving intuitive eating a try, or if you are just curious about what it is all about, then this post is for you!

What is Intuitive Eating?

Intuitive eating is an approach to nutrition that is based on the principle of listening to your body's internal cues. It involves paying attention to hunger and fullness signals, as well as your body's response to food, in order to make decisions about what and how much to eat.

The purpose of this approach is to benefit people who have struggled with disordered eating or dieting, as it can help to break the cycle of restrictive eating and negative body image. Also, intuitive eating vow to work as a helpful tool for managing weight in a healthy way.

The basic principles of intuitive eating are:

1. Eat when you're hungry.

2. Stop when you're full.

3. Honor your cravings.

4. Listen to your body's needs.

5. Respect your body and yourself.

6. Exercise for enjoyment, not weight loss.

7. Allow yourself to eat your favorite foods.

8. Connect with your food and enjoy it.

9. Don't use food as a coping mechanism.

10. Make peace with food and your body.

According to the intuitive eating approach, these principles can help you to retrain your body and mind to listen to your internal cues of hunger and fullness, rather than outside dieting rules.

When you tune in to your body's signals, you're more likely to make choices that are nourishing and satisfying, both physically and emotionally.

As a result, you may find that you no longer struggle with chronic dieting and yo-yo weight fluctuations. Instead, you can develop a healthy, sustainable relationship with food and your body.

Seven Things that I Leaned

  1. Intuitive Eating is Not a Diet

The first thing I learned is that intuitive eating is not a diet. Diets are all about restriction and deprivation, but intuitive eating is about listening to your body and giving it what it needs. This was a refreshing change for me, and I found myself feeling more in tune with my body than ever before.

  1. You Don't have to be Perfect all the Time

Another thing I learned is that intuitive eating is not about perfection. There are no "rules" to follow, and you can eat whatever you want! This was a huge relief for me, as I often feel guilty when I indulge in my favorite foods.

  1. Eating is not about Weight Loss

I also learned that intuitive eating is not about weight loss. This was a big one for me, as I have always used food as a way to control my weight. But with intuitive eating, the focus is on honoring your hunger and fullness cues, not on losing weight.

  1. I enjoy cooking

I learned that I really enjoy cooking for myself. I love trying new recipes and making old favorites. I also learned that I need to be more mindful of my portion sizes. Just because something is healthy doesn't mean I can eat as much as I want.

  1. I make unhealthy eating choices

I also discovered that I'm a lot more likely to make unhealthy choices when I'm tired or stressed. So, I need to be more mindful of taking care of myself emotionally and physically.

  1. I need to learn to trust myself

I'm used to dieting and restriction, so it's hard for me to let go and trust that my body will naturally find its balance. But I'm learning that my body is much more capable than I give it credit for, and that it knows what it needs better than I do.

So far, intuitive eating has taught me to be more patient with myself and to trust the process. I'm slowly learning to listen to my body and give it what it wants, when it wants it. And you know what? It's not as hard as I thought it would be!

  1. Intuitive Learning is not a sprint but a Marathon

Lastly, I learned that intuitive eating is a journey. It's not something that you can do for a week or even a month. It's something that you need to work on for a lifetime. But the good news is that it gets easier with practice, and I am already feeling more in tune with my body after just one week.

If you are thinking about giving intuitive eating a try, I encourage you to do it! It has been such a positive experience for me, and I know it can be for you too. Just remember to be patient, listen to your body, and enjoy the journey!
